Gubblehoff’s Odyssey is a platforming game with a twist. You cannot attack in any way, only your shadow can, so you have to fight in light, and hide in darkness. The goal is to collect the 4 ingredients for the EVIL alchemist.

CONTROLS
A and D to move
Space to jump, S to fall through platforms
Left click to attack

Okay just gonna get it outta the way from the start. Art is fantastic, heavy Hollow Knight inspiration I believe. Which is awesome cos I LOVE that game.

So unfortunately I didn't finish the game because my browser crashed and I lost my progress. I had gotten 2 of the 4 times at the time and if I'm being honest it was kinda tedious. Platforming was really punishing because you had to go back to the previous screen to reset and try again, I figured out it was much easier to just die to get back to the start of the area than walk all the way back.

I love the mechanic of your attacks only working in the light but attacking enemies was really slow and after quickly figuring out there wasn't much punishment for death it was easier to just tank the hits and run through the enemies instead of going to the hassle of stopping to kill them.

Also I had no idea where to go after getting the 2nd item. I thought I looked everywhere but I couldn't see anymore doors. I may have just been blind.

I really want to love this game because it's so cool and really love the style. I hope you work on it more in the future so I can come back to it again and replay it.

Cool artstyle and interesting fighting mechanic! I had a lot of fun trying this game, and the boss battle was tense but not too difficult. only part i really got stuck on was trying to get the golden apple, because I feel like the platforming there is more of a test of endurance rather than skill, but overall well made!

Also forgot to mention that the cover art is sick AF

Thank you! I'll relay this to our artist since everything you see in the game (and the cover art) was made by him. That platforming was planned before a physics change that may be the reason for that, sorry about that.

I really like the game design. The mood is excellent! The shadow interpretation is a very creative idea. The main character is really great, but the bats are really a bit boring, and you can't decide whether they are spiders, crabs or rats. The tracks are a bit difficult, but the atmosphere more than makes up for it! It turned out to be a very good game in such a short time! Congratulations to the developers, I hope we will see games from them in the future!

Thanks for the reply!

The bats were a bit too strong in the earlier versions so we toned them down a bit, sry about that.

They are spiders, a bit of foreshadowing for the boss. We plan to either finish this game (ie. add more maps) or make a new one!

Neat art style, cool theme music (kinda transcending into the game world), interesting interpretation of the shadow theme. Unlike my previous commenter, I appreciated these slightly challenging platform passages (even doe I am not "Jump King" fan either).  Overall, a pretty good showing for the game jam.

Thank you! Some jumps were deemed to hard to complete by our internal checks (one of us couldn't do it) so we made them easier. Maybe in the future there will be difficulties changes!

First of all, I love the art style and the music, great job on it ! Also, that shadow idea is really unique !

However, the platforming feels horrible imo (Too much time to accelerate/decelerate, I think; I personally prefer snappier movement).

The controls are also not the best, I think that assigning the jump to the Space Bar and the attack to the Left Mouse Button might be better.

Pair the two points mentioned above with the fact that you can literally fall to the beginning (Talking about that chain section + the wooden area after it), and you've essentially got yourself a rage game.

After getting 3 of the ingredients and 10+ attempts at that chain area + the wooden area, I just gave up, and I apologize for not finishing the game.

Of course, this is all my personal opinion and, to be honest, I'm not the best at platforming but I can definitely see this being a great game for someone better at platforming, so, great job !

(Also, those bats are really annoying)

Hi! Thank you for your feedback, we really appreciate it!

We changed the controls to what you suggested and also made it so you attack in the direction you click.  We've tweaked the acceleration values as well and changed the levels so instead of falling to the start you die and reset the room you're in.

I hope these changes will make the game more fun and fair and I hope you'll give it another try, there's something fun at the end :)

Hello! The game indeed feels much better to play now, I even managed to complete it :D One tiny thing I noticed is that if you press A/D and the jump button at the same time(Which happens rather often when platforming), the player doesn't jump, it's minor but fixing that might help make the game feel even better. Good luck on this and your future projects !

Should be fixed now, thank you!
